Von Venn are back with new album, “Forgetting The Fall”. Following 2023’s “Jeanie is Out”, this new record finds Cox and his Dublin based collaborators navigating trickier emotional territory. The album opens with “Still Falling,” a track that captures that last gasp of innocence before everything shifts. From there, Cox guides us through what he calls a “waking up” process, one that feels particularly relevant given how disorienting the world has become lately.

“Mainstream” hits hardest for me. It’s a sharp critique of media bias wrapped in a melody that sticks with you long after the song ends. Rebecca Lane’s saxophone solo cuts through the mix at just the right moment, giving the track an unexpected edge. Producer Terry Doyle, who recorded the album at Soundcaster Studios, wrote that solo, and it’s one of those inspired choices that elevates the entire song.

What impresses me most is how Cox avoids bitterness. This could easily have been a cynical record, but it never feels that way. “You Can Talk to Me” explores adult relationships with real emotional intelligence, acknowledging complexity without getting lost in it. “Only In The Night” offers comfort when you need it most. And by the time you reach “Be Free,” the album’s closer, there’s this sense of earned empowerment. Cox has looked at the world clearly and decided to keep moving forward anyway.

The full band brings real depth to these songs. Ciara Henry’s vocals add warmth throughout, Terry Doyle’s keyboard work creates space when the songs need to breathe, and Mark Wogan’s drumming keeps everything grounded. You can hear touches of influence ranging from Television’s angular guitar work to the lush arrangements of Melody’s Echo Chamber, but Von Venn never sounds like they’re chasing anyone else’s sound.
