‘Where We Came From’ By Complex

Words: A. Murray.

Singing with pure tenacity, Complex hits the nail on the head with ‘Where We Came From’. He has a message to tell us, and he expresses himself clearly with each word resonating fully.

Taking influence from UK Hip Hop legends, Complex takes a hint but also adds his slant. Speaking of his previous years, he grips and it makes for a meaningful listen from the get-go. What, I relish most about Complex is the keen ability he has to be versatile. Furthermore, he often changes his approach regularly singing traditionally and also delving into a contemporary rap space in sections.

The music is a strong force within this track too. It has a laid back style, but yet it provides huge omnipotent characteristics while staying far enough back not to take over the mix. However, a few more instruments and sounds added in various places could have added wonders. Also, I believe if it had a slight increase in tempo, the velocity would have added even more stance and oomph. But, the chill approach does work and keeps the attention on the lyrical message.

For me, the track reminds me of ‘Professor Green’. Musically, they are worlds apart, but their ability to articulate meaningful messages is alike. Also, there is a hint of American Hip Hop poking out of the well put together mix too. Was American Hip Hop an influence for the artist growing up? I would say so based on this track.

This track is from the streets where he hails, and it is a testament to his ability to grow and evolve as a musician. Also, his ‘taking no hostages’ approach to music is refreshing.
