The mood I’ve created for myself to review Von Venn’s new song ‘Hero’ is perfect for listening to some blissful indie music: a dark, cosy room with a candle flickering away in the background.

The leader of the Irish band, Gary Cox, straps me in for a roller coaster trip I’ll never forget. It’s a fun trip full of self-reflection and nostalgic musings. A female harmony kicks off the song over a bass line that makes your shoulders sway and a guitar riff that’s as smooth as butter. Also, maybe a glockenspiel, maybe not? Whatever it is, a sound arrives and adds extra sparkle to the encounter.

Gary Cox, who sings with conviction, provides the song’s compelling story, which includes themes of yearning for a ‘Hero’ and going back in time. The intensity of the music increases throughout, culminating in a style reminiscent of ELO.
